What does inclusive employment mean to you transcript.pdf
When we spoke to members of the public in Durham city centre about disability and employment, one response stood out:
“Being open to who you employ and adapting to suit someone else’s needs.”
It’s a simple answer, but it reflects something many employers are discovering: creating a more inclusive workplace is often less complicated than people think.
In this street interview, we explored attitudes towards disability in the workplace, workplace adjustments, and the positive impact employment can have on confidence, independence, and wellbeing. We also discussed how awareness, understanding and a willingness to adapt can help unlock opportunities for talented people who may otherwise face barriers to work.
Small changes, big difference
Many employers want to create a more inclusive workplace but are not always sure where to start.
The good news is that workplace adjustments are often more achievable than expected. As highlighted in our conversation. inclusion can begin with something as simple as education, awareness, and an openness to understanding individual needs.
For disabled people, work can provide structure, purpose, confidence, and a sense of belonging. For employers, building an inclusive workforce can help attract talented candidates, strengthen workplace culture and demonstrate a genuine commitment to equality and opportunity.
That’s where DurhamEnable can help.
