What does inclusion at work really look like transcript.pdf
When we spoke to people outside of Durham Cathedral about disability and employment, one answer stood out:
“Feeling like part of the team and not the odd one out, whether you have a disability or not.”
It’s a simple observation, but it captures something that every employer should strive for: creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, supported and able to contribute.
In our latest DurhamEnable street interview, we explored the realities disabled people can face when getting into work, staying in work, and accessing the support they need to succeed. The conversation touched on workplace inclusion, the importance of support, and the difference that employment can make to a person’s confidence, wellbeing, and sense of purpose.
Understanding the challenges
During the discussion, one recurring theme emerged: many people are unsure what support is available for disabled people, while employers may not always know how to make their workplace more inclusive.
There’s often a perception that workplace adjustments are expensive, time-consuming or complicated to introduce. In reality, many forms of support are far more accessible than employers realise.
For disabled people, having the right support can make the difference between missing out on opportunities and building a rewarding career. For employers, creating an inclusive workplace can help attract talent, strengthen workplace culture and ensure more people have the opportunity to thrive.
How DurhamEnable supports employers
At DurhamEnable, we work with both employers and disabled people to help create sustainable employment opportunities.
Through our Place, Train, and Maintain approach, we support individuals into suitable roles, provide ongoing guidance and training, and help both staff and employers build successful long-term working relationships. Much of this support is provided free of charge, helping organisations access practical advice and expertise with unnecessary barriers.
We know that many employers want to be more inclusive. Often, they simply need the right information, support, and opportunity to learn from others facing similar challenges.
