Finding the right support can change a life transcript.pdf
When we spoke to people in Durham about disability and employment, one response perfectly captured the impact that meaningful work can have:
“Once you get into a job and work, your routine becomes better and your mental health gets better because you’ve got something to look forward to and be proud about.”
For many disabled people, finding the right job is about much more than earning a wage. It’s about confidence, independence, routine, purpose, and feeling part of something bigger.
In our latest street interview, we explored some of the barriers disabled people can face when looking for work, the role that confidence and employer attitudes can play, and why the right support can make all the difference.
Breaking down barriers
One of the strongest themes from the conversation was fear. Fear of judgement. Fear of rejection. Fear of being underestimated before being given a chance to demonstrate skills and abilities.
The interview highlighted how assumptions about disability can become barriers to employment, despite the fact that disabled people can bring valuable skills, perspectives, and talents to the workplace. As one participant explained, people should never assume what someone is capable of achieving.
For many individuals, securing the right role can be life-changing. Employment can provide structure, improve wellbeing, build confidence, and create opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Why inclusive employers matter
The reality is that many workplace barriers can be reduced through understanding, flexibility, and the right support.
During the interview, DurhamEnable discussed how simple adjustments, such as flexible working arrangements, phased hours, or tailored support, can help disabled people succeed in work and contribute their skills with confidence.
Creating an inclusive workplace does not just benefit staff. It can help employers:
- access a wider and more diverse talent pool
- improve employee engagement and retention
- foster a positive workplace culture
- demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion
- build a reputation as an employer of choice
Inclusive employment is not about lowering expectations. It’s about removing unnecessary barriers so that talented people have the opportunity to thrive.
