There are still a lot of myths surrounding employment of people with disabilities, and you may have questions about what DurhamEnable does.
We hope to dispel some of these myths and answer some of your questions here!
Myth Busting
Myth: employing someone with a disability will be more expensive
Fact: Most reasonable adjustments are inexpensive or will not cost anything to implement. Additionally, you can save money by recruiting staff through us. We match your requirements to our jobseekers, and can set up a work trial, so you save on advertising vacancies and interviewing candidates.
Myth: people with disabilities can only work in limited roles
Fact: Everyone has different skills, and this is no different for people with disabilities. Nearly a quarter of disabled people in a 2020 survey had a degree or equivalent education. Others are skilled in trades or have training from previous employment. We support people with a range of experiences, capable of working in many different job roles and environments.
Myth: a member of staff with a disability will require constant support
Fact: Not everyone requires in-work support, and our goal is to help people gain more independence in work and life, through a combination of training and support where needed. We will gradually phase out support when your member of staff is settled and working well.
FAQs
What will this cost me?
Nothing! Job Coaching is absolutely free, to the jobseeker/ member of staff and the employer. The Job Coach is a Durham County Council member of staff, covered under our insurance, and at no cost to you.
Will it take me more time to train a member of staff with a disability
Our support is designed to make life easier for both the person we support and the business that employs them.
Many employers find that job coaching makes the recruitment, and induction process easier, because they have another person there whose job it is to help that member of staff.
We perform a job analysis to make sure we understand everything about your business that is relevant to the new person, so we can give support that will allow you to be efficient with your time.
What does a Job Coach do?
A Job Coach is there to help your jobseeker become comfortable with the job, whether that is helping them get used to the routine of work, assisting with training for a certain task, or become familiar to new surroundings.
Job Coaches are not there to do the job for the jobseeker, and the goal is always to have the Job Coach fade away as you and your member of staff grow in confidence and the jobseeker becomes independent.
When and how quickly that happens depends on the jobseeker, and the needs of your business.
I want to become a disability confident employer, can you help?
Yes, whether you are accessing our free job analysis service, using us a free recruitment tool or accessing disability awareness training we will help you re-shape your recruitment practice and become an inclusive employer.
We will also make sure you get the recognition you deserve by ensuring you are part of the national Disability Confident scheme and share your good practice with our partners.
